Driving While Upset

Driving while you are distracted is one of the worst things that you can do. Not only does it put you at risk for getting into an accident with other people, but it can also affect your decision making ability. Have you ever been in the car with someone who is not paying attention? One of the prime examples of this type of situation is a mother who is driving with two children in the back seat. One of the most common things that parents do while they are driving is that they tend to focus more on their children than they do on the road.

Granted, not all parents are bad drivers. However, there are times when you need to really focus on the road and put that first before you focus in on your kids. When you are driving along, do you ever notice when other drivers aren’t paying attention? More and more, we are beginning to see and hear news reports of parents or other adult caregivers becoming involved in motor vehicle accidents due to negligence on their part. These are parents and caregivers who mean well and would normally never do anything to harm their children and/or put them in harms way. However, all it takes is just one second to glance down at the radio to change the station. Additionally, it takes significantly more time to physically turn your body around in the driver’s seat in order to see what your kids are up to in the back seat of the car. In that same amount of a time, a deer or other animal could run across the road right in front of your car.

In the same amount of time that it takes you to realize that you are not in a position to defend yourself or perform a quick maneuver to get out of harm’s way, it is usually too late. What are you going to do when you become involved in an accident because you weren’t paying attention? What is perhaps worse are those situations in which a parent is transporting someone else’s child and becomes involved in a car accident. It’s everyone’s worse nightmare, so why aren’t we then taking more precautions when we are behind the wheel of a car?

Just the other day, I was driving on the highway when a minivan that was ahead of me and to the right drifted sharply into my lane. Granted, I wasn’t quite next to them and could still react in enough time not to become involved in a car accident, but I still tooted my horn to alert them of how they were driving. Very quickly, I saw them pull themselves back into their lane, but as they quickly jerked themselves back into their lane, had I been next to them, it would have been too late. These are the sorts of things that other drivers have to be aware of. Additionally, if you are driving a vehicle and are transporting children, you need to be especially vigilant so that you don’t get into an accident.
